Standing Strong - A gentle space to begin again

When you’ve lived through domestic abuse, the world can feel unsteady. Even after reaching physical safety, many women describe a quiet ache that lingers, the sense of being overwhelmed, disconnected, or unsure of who they are now. Healing doesn’t happen all at once. It happens in small, steady moments of support, safety, and kindness.
The Standing Strong Programme was created with exactly this in mind. It is a gentle, therapeutic space designed by Aanchal Women’s Aid to support women living in refuge or safe accommodation pan-London as they begin rebuilding their lives. If you are in that in‑between stage, no longer in danger, but not yet feeling fully yourself then Standing Strong may be just what you need.
A programme built around your pace
There is no pressure to be ready, no expectation to share your story, and no requirement to engage in formal therapy if that doesn’t feel right. Instead, the programme offers a flexible, low‑barrier way to reconnect with yourself gently and gradually.
Through online modules, weekly peer support sessions, and optional one‑to‑one counselling, Standing Strong helps you:
Manage overwhelming emotions
Rebuild a sense of identity and self‑worth
Develop practical coping tools
Feel less isolated
Strengthen confidence in your decision‑making
These sessions are delivered in small, supportive groups where every person is treated with dignity, compassion, and respect. You can dip in and out, take breaks when you need them, and return to the online learning space whenever you choose. There is no right way to participate, only the way that feels safe for you.
Why this space matters
Leaving an abusive relationship is an act of enormous courage. But the emotional journey that follows can be just as challenging. Many women find themselves navigating fear, grief, confusion, or a deep sense of loss. Standing Strong recognises this and offers a space where you don’t have to pretend to be okay. You don’t have to have everything figured out. You simply need to show up as you are.
The programme is culturally responsive, trauma‑informed, and designed to meet women from all backgrounds with understanding and care. Whether you feel anxious, numb, hopeful, or unsure, you will be met with kindness. You will be reminded that healing is not about perfection, it’s about finding small moments of steadiness and connection.
A community that understands
One of the most powerful aspects of Standing Strong is the sense of community it creates. When you sit with other women who have walked similar paths, something shifts. You realise you are not alone. You realise your reactions make sense.
Peer support sessions offer a safe place to share, listen, or simply be present.

Looking toward your future
Standing Strong is about helping you feel emotionally stronger, more connected, and more confident as you move forward. If you have left your home due to domestic abuse and are now in a refuge or safe accommodation, this programme is here to support you.
